Blog: The future of school funding

UNISON Northern is supporting a petition calling for a debate in parliament on the future of school funding. You will find the link at the end of this post.

UNISON represents thousands of school support staff across the Region and those members do fantastic work to help children learn, keep them safe and healthy and schools running smoothly.

But, this is under threat because of continued cuts to school funding; we have already seen support staff posts cut and the staff that are left taking on extra work, often through unpaid overtime, just to keep the school running.  UNISON members are telling us about the level of stress and demoralisation, and concerns about the future education for our children.

According to schoolcuts.org.uk, between 2015 and 2020, Northumberland is set to lose £8.9million, average £227 per pupil, Newcastle 5.2million average £163 per pupil,  Stockton £3.8million, average £150 per pupil and Redcar and Cleveland  £4.3million, average £226 per pupil.

We can’t go on like this. Our schools are too important to be put at risk by failing government policies, increasing workloads, funding and staffing cuts, which hurt support staff, teachers, and of course, children.

Now is the time to have your say, this is our chance to get schools the funding they deserve but we need to know what our members feelings are around how to take the campaign forward.  UNISON will be running a consultative ballot of our members about their pay, terms and condition and workload.

We will be sending our members an email when the ballot opens. It is very important that we have the most up to date details so that you don’t miss out on taking part in the ballot. Please check we have a current email address for you. The ballot will start from 22 January.
