Blog: Celebrating activists during #HeartUnions week

Clare Williams thanks activists during #HeartUnions week in her latest blog.

This week is #HeartUnions week – where we celebrate the work and dedication that our workplace reps and activists do to improve the lives of working people.

I want to thank all of the activists who have worked tirelessly during the pandemic. They have listened to our members concerns and worked with and challenged employers to address issues.

Health and safety has played a huge role in the last two years and I’m pleased to see that we have more health and safety reps now than before the pandemic. Health and safety reps new and old have been key in making sure workplaces are risk assessed and covid safe. If you have ever thought about getting involved in health and safety, this week is the perfect time to do so and you can register your interest on our website.

The year ahead will be just as challenging – the crisis in social care is set to continue with the recently published white paper failing to address the lack of investment in services and staff.  Workers across all sectors are feeling the pinch with the cost of living soaring, resulting in hard working people struggling to keep the lights on and put food on the table. The government must deliver the cash so this year’s wage increases are above the rate of inflation. Otherwise, the consequences will be disastrous for everyone.

What can we do to put things right? Get involved in your union. If you’re a UNISON member you can register your interest to become more active and if you’re not a member of UNSION, now is the time to join.
