Blog: Race Equality Week 2022 – Guest post by Nicky Ramanandi

Regional Convenor, Nicky Ramanandi blogs about Race Equalities Week.

Everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect. The ability to live and work without prejudice is a fundamental right, regardless of your background, identity and experiences.

Here in the Northern Region we have been working to address inequality for many years, we support organisations such as Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC), funding them to deliver educational workshops in schools across the North East. Working together with SRtRC we have delivered training to UNISON members and their colleagues in workplaces across the region, we have developed an Ambassador Programme which has produced hundreds of graduates who are then able to tackle inequality in their workplace and communities.

Race equality week is an important annual event which brings together unions, employees and their organisations with one goal in mind, to bring about equality in the workplace. This is why UNISON has now signed up to become part of this campaign to make the change we want to see. To bring about a time when people from all backgrounds can go about their lives without facing the discrimination and microaggressions that others don’t experience.

Running from the 7th – 13th of February, the theme of Race Equality Week 2022 is Action not just words!

One of UNISON’s main aims is to help workers fight for fairness and equality in the workplace and beyond. Challenging discrimination and winning equality is at the heart of everything UNISON does.

To support our members and branches to make a difference we have produced a raft of resources that activists can use to educate themselves and their colleagues on the issues and further resources to encourage employers to take action to address inequality.

UNISON has a history of winning on equality. We will continue to fight against discrimination, wherever we encounter it, and regularly help members challenge unequal or unfair treatment. This includes all forms of prejudice and discrimination, racism, bullying and harassment and fighting for equal pay.
